When I first got to Manhattan in December, 1997 I started to obsessively draw “Hughcards” [hand-drawn cartoons on the back of business cards], just to give me something to do while sitting at the bar. Two decades later, I’m still at it.
The work weaves in between abstraction and non-abstraction simply because the thoughts we carry inside our heads do the same.
Looking back, for all the countless hours spent drawing over the years, it seems to me that the best thing to come out of it was the fact that a good many of those hours were spent bringing my mind to a meditative state, a Zen state, in the zone, a mindful state, closer to the Lord, call it what you will. For that, I am truly grateful.
